The incident began at a Pineville Food Lion on Tuesday, May 14. An off-duty officer who was in uniform found the suspect, later identified as Dennis Bodden, 46, of Charlotte, in the parking lot and was met with a “level of resistance,” according to authorities.

Backup was called in, a taser was used unsuccessfully, and Bodden ultimately was shot and killed, according to the police report.

A separate investigation involving Pineville Police remains active in the incident.

Pineville Police referred to Bodden as a chronic shoplifting suspect, stating that he had two outstanding warrants for felony breaking and entering and felony larceny after breaking and entering, all of which took place at this same Food Lion.

The officer involved in the shooting and the backup officer were placed on paid administrative leave pending the joint criminal and internal investigations.
