EDISON, NJ - An Edison man has been sentenced to five years in prison in connection to a fatal crash in Piscataway, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Ahmadsabir Ashaq, age 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree Vehicular Homicide on March 28.

On June 3, 2023, at 1:41 AM police say they responded to Stelton Road and Mindy Lane in Piscataway due to a motor vehicle crash. Ashaq was driving a Lexus Sedan and struck a Ford Focus, then struck a utility pole and caught fire, according to prosecutors.

The Ford Focus sustained damage and also caught fire. The driver was Shailesh Gurrapu, age 24 from Carteret, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ashaq and a passenger in his Lexus were transported to the hospital for treatment, according to prosecutors.

An investigation by Piscataway Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office determined that Ashaq was driving on Stelton Road at speeds in excess of 110 miles-per-hour before the collision.

Ashaq will serve a five year sentence in New Jersey State Prison and is subject to the No Early Release Act, meaning he will serve 85% of his sentence without parole. He will be on parole supervision for three years upon release, according to prosecutors.
