PITTSBURG, KS – Second through eighth graders would participate in a youth skills camp at John Lance arena.

Head men’s basketball coach Jeff Boschee and assistant coach Jamahl DePriest would run the activities for the morning. Dozens of kids would participate in five on five and three on three games using all courts within the gym.

Assistant Pitt State men’s basketball coach Jamahl DePriest said it was exciting being able to give back.

“It’s just exciting to be able to give back and see the development of the kids,” said DePriest.

“I always like seeing them get better and more coordinated, and grow into their skills. It’s really a rewarding process, and them having fun is really a huge part of it as well.”

Hayden Shanks, a redshirt sophomore guard with Pitt State, said he enjoys being able to help the kids as he was once attending youth camps.

“I know how they feel, and I’ve been in their shoes” said Shanks.

“I get to teach them certain things that I could’ve used when I was younger.”

The goal of the camp was to focus on learning sportsmanship, work ethic, and discipline. All workouts would begin at 9:30 a.m. and run until noon.
