After back-to-back MIAA conference championships, the Pittsburg State Gorillas are looking to build on their previous success under first-year head coach Tom Anthony.

Before the team ever steps out on the field, Pittsburg State’s success starts with recruiting, something the Gorillas have seemingly mastered in recent years.

While recruiting has evolved rapidly over the years thanks to social media platforms, in-person camps and combines are still a vital part of the process to ensure coaches can actually see prospects with their own eyes rather than a highlight reel.

On Saturday, July 27, Pittsburg State held the last of its summer camps with only high school athletes and college hopefuls in attendance for the final rendition.

With the entirety of the Gorillas’ coaching staff as well as guest coaches from other local schools in attendance, the participating athletes had an opportunity to showcase their skills in a variety of drills and position-based workouts.

Anthony, who served as Pittsburg State’s defensive coordinator since 2019 before taking over as head coach, believes these camps are vital for the program to continue improving.

“There’s a lot of these kids that we already know who they are,” Anthony said. “We’ve been talking to them. So now it’s a chance for us to get them on campus, get the chance to work with them, and kind of see if what we’re seeing on tape can kind of correlate to what they do on the field in front of us.”

Looking to build on their success from the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Pittsburg State kicks off their regular season at home, taking on the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday, August 31 at 7 p.m. CST.
