Pittsburgh-based Jennmar Acquires G&R Gas Services
Pittsburgh-based infrastructure product provider Jennmar Holdings LLC announced today it has acquired G&R Gas Services, a Virginia-based company that provides maintenance services to the oil and gas industry. <\p> Jennmar, headquartered in O'Hara Township, will gain G&R’s existing customer agreements along with about 100 employees and 100 service vehicles, according to a release. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed<\p>
Mayweather Boxing + Fitness announces move out of the Strip terminal
Mayweather Boxing + Fitness, a fitness franchise that opened as one of the early tenants in the Strip District Terminal about a year and a half ago, announced in an email that its last classes in the location will be Wednesday, June 12.<\p> The email details that the operation must be out of its current 2,500-square-foot space in the Terminal redevelopment by Saturday, June 15, and that the franchise is expected to relocate to as yet unnamed location in the Strip District a few blocks away.<\p>
Kennametal resumes operations at Arkansas facility after tornado
Kennametal's Rogers, Arkansas plant is back online.<\p> After sustaining tornado damage from a May 26 storm, Kennametal Inc. was forced to temporarily shut down the Arkansas facility, which produces engineered carbide wear components used primarily in the energy and engineering industries. The facility also produces rods used in the manufacturing of certain round tools of the company's metal cutting business.<\p>
Crown Castle to lay off 10% of workforce, keep Southpointe office
Crown Castle Inc., one of Southpointe's oldest and largest tenants, is laying off 10% of its workforce and closing some of its offices in its latest round of restructuring. But the company will retain its offices at Southpointe, which had been targeted for closure in a previous round of cuts before the order was rescinded.<\p> The cellphone tower and fiber-optic business, which is based in Texas, has a major presence at Southpointe where it occupies two buildings and had, at last count, about 1,100 employees. But the company, which has been shaken by changes in the industry and has gone through three CEOs in about six months, has also gone through two previous rounds of layoffs in the last year. Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI) in October under a previous CEO had plans to close the Southpointe offices and relocate many of the employees to Texas, although the plans were rescinded after that CEO left and an interim took over.<\p>

It's official: BNY Mellon is now BNY after almost 17 years.<\p> The international financial giant's name remains the Bank of New York Mellon Corp., but the venerable Pittsburgh bank's name has been sliced from the brand and logo.<\p>
Pittsburgh Technical College to close in August
On Monday evening, Pittsburgh Technical College announced that it will be closing its doors. <\p> The Oakdale-based college has provided students in the region with various programs, including nursing, trades technology, culinary arts and more, for nearly 80 years. <\p>
CMU names new head of Machine Learning Department
Last year, Zico Kolter and a team of researchers were attacking ChatGPT to expose flaws in it and similar models. Now, he's preparing to take up the helm as director of Carnegie Mellon's Machine Learning Department, and while optimistic about the pace of the field, he's still got his eye on safety.<\p> "Whenever you have a massive new technology like this, there is always the possibility to use it in ways that benefit society and use it in ways that harm society," Kolter said. "Right now, generative AI techniques are tools that enable people to do certain things more efficiently and better. In that context, even just as a tool, there's massive ability to disrupt our current ecosystems."<\p>
UArts closure in Philly triggers layoffs at Pittsburgh-based Parkhurst
The abrupt closure of Philadelphia’s University of the Arts on June 7 translates to layoffs for a Pittsburgh company.<\p> Parkhurst Dining filed a Warn Notice with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry that it laid off 34 employees. Parkhurst, the catering division of Eat’n Park Hospitality Group Inc., had served UArts. <\p>

Hitachi Rail acquires company for $1.8 billion
Hitachi Rail, a global transportation company with North American headquarters in Pittsburgh, has recently acquired Thales’ Ground Transportation Systems. <\p> The acquisition was completed on May 31, 2024 for $1.8 billion. Hitachi Rail, which is behind Japan's high speed bullet train, said in a release that the deal will strengthen its focus on shifting customers from private to more sustainable public transportation and expand its global presence to 51 countries.<\p>

How Peoples, H Quest want to inexpensively integrate hydrogen here
Peoples and Pittsburgh startup H Quest are working on the next step in the energy transition, a device that takes natural gas to create hydrogen that can be used as heat and power in industrial buildings and residences with a byproduct of a solid carbon that can be used for industrial purposes.<\p> Peoples and H Quest along with the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh have been working for the past year or so on a demonstration project at Peoples' training center in McKeesport. H Quest's technology, which has a footprint in similar size to a shipping container, converts ordinary natural gas into hydrogen and carbon without emissions, using a process known as microwave pyrolysis.<\p>
Gen Z cites housing affordability as its top election issue
In the wake of rapid home-price appreciation during the Covid-19 pandemic, housing is playing a bigger role in how Americans vote — among one demographic in particular.<\p> Ninety-one percent of adult Gen Zers said in a recent Redfin Corp. (Nasdaq: RDFN) survey housing affordability is important when considering whom they will vote for in the presidential election this November. Among a list of nine broad political topics, the subject ranked No. 1 for that generation — ranking even higher than the strength of the overall economy, which was the top priority for millennials, Gen Xers and baby boomers. Housing affordability for Gen Z respondents also outranked issues of education, gun rights and abortion rights.<\p>
Pittsburgh ranked third highest paying metro for AI engineers in U.S.
Pittsburgh was named the third highest paying metro for artificial intelligence software engineers, earning a median pay of $243,650 annually. The report comes from salary analysis company Levels.fyi.<\p> Pittsburgh was only beaten by the San Francisco Bay area, where employees earn a median of $318,150 annually, and Seattle, where the median was $310,000 annually. Directly underneath Pittsburgh was New York City, with a median of $242,667.<\p>
