Russell Wilson 'Won't Keep' Steelers Starting Job Over Justin Fields

The collective eyebrow was raised when the Chicago Bears traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly after Russell Wilson joined Mike Tomlin's team.

With reports stating that Wilson was given assurances that he would be Pittsburgh's starter in 2024, signing Fields has just put a big spanner in the works.

While at the time of writing, it is Wilson's job to lose, based on his production over the last two years, the starting role is anything but secured.

There is a real chance that Wilson starts in Week 1, but if things go south, there is a younger quarterback who is looking to re-ignite his career and is perhaps in the best position to succeed for the first time since entering the NFL.

With Fields now in the "backup" role, FS1's Nick Wright doesn't think it will be long before he usurps Wilson as the Steelers' starter.

"I do think it will be Russell Wilson Week 1," Wright said on First Things First. "But as confident as I am that it'll be Russell in Week 1, I believe it'll be Justin Week 18 and the weeks leading up to it. I do not think Russell keeps this job, but I think he'll start with this job on a very short leash."

It is certainly an interesting dynamic that has now been created in Pittsburgh, as both quarterbacks could easily feel they deserve to be the starter.

How the meshing of the quarterback room goes over training camp and toward the start of next season will be a fascinating watch, and while Wilson has two hands on the starting job now, it is anything but a formality.

And Fields will be eagerly awaiting his chance.
