On Wednesday, U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman (both D-PA) joined U.S. Reps. Chris Delzio and Summer Lee (both D-PA) in announcing that the Pittsburgh International Airport would receive more than $20.6 million for ongoing terminal improvement.

The funding, an Airport Infrastructure grant to support critical airport development projects, is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and would improve and reconstruct the airport’s terminal building.

“As Southwestern Pennsylvania’s airports grow to serve this vibrant region, it’s critical that we improve the passenger experience, make our airports more efficient, and help keep passengers and workers safe,” Casey. “This investment from the infrastructure law will help strengthen Southwestern Pennsylvania’s economy and keep our region and our Commonwealth moving.”

Officials said the funding would support more efficient movement of passengers and baggage, while increasing energy efficiency and replacing aging infrastructure, including gate seating areas.

Law makers said the Allegheny County Airport would also receive $851,000 in funding. That money, also part of the Airport Infrastructure Grant funding, would help rehabilitate taxiways.

“Any investment in the commonwealth is good news, and this project will stimulate our tourism economy and improve the travel experience for everyone flying into PIT and AGC,” Fetterman said.

Since the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, more than $140 million has passed to the two airports. In February 2024, lawmakers announce $5.3 million in new infrastructure funding would pay for a component of the 700,000 square foot landslide terminal construction. Pittsburgh International Airport has received more than $123 million since the start of 2021, while the Allegheny County Airport has received more than $12 million.
