Protesters gathered in Shadyside to call for change from the University of Pittsburgh.

At 5:06 p.m. Pitt Police said the protest was happening in the area of Devonshire Street between Fifth Avenue and Ellsworth Avenue.

A protest attendee said they are protesting because Joan Gabel, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, will not sit down with them to talk about divestment from Israel.

Protesters wrote messages on the street road and called for an end to violence in Gaza.

The AP reports that more than 38,400 people in Gaza have been killed in Israeli ground offensive and bombardments since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that killed at least 1,200 people.

The demonstration impacted traffic while it was happening and travelers were asked to plan ahead.

At this time, Pitt Police say operations in the area have returned to normal.

Channel 11 has reached out to the University of Pittsburgh for a response to the protest and is waiting to hear back.
