At the tender age of just 22, Paul Skenes is already making big league history.

The Pirates ace has garnered endless praise during a rookie season unlike any other in recent memory. With a 1.90 ERA, 89 strikeouts in just 66.1 innings, and a flawless 6-0 record, Skenes has taken MLB by storm.

It wasn't all that long ago when Skenes was a teenager yearning for the bright lights of the big leagues. His high school days have garnered plenty of interest recently, as a matter of fact, with many wondering whether he was born with a golden arm or had it cultivated throughout his adolescence.

So, without further ado, here's a look back at Skenes' glittering high school career, a time when he doubled up as both a pitching dynamo and a fearsome slugger in Orange County.

Paul Skenes high school career, revisited

Skenes starred at El Toro High School, an Orange County powerhouse that has developed All-Star level talent, including sure-handed third basemen Nolan Arenado and Matt Chapman.

Much like his predecessors, Skenes got his start in the infield. He first made his chops as a catcher, then as a third baseman, before settling into a role as a two-way player as a junior.

He proceeded to set the CIF Southern Section alight, showcasing his arm talent as a member of El Toro's bullpen (Skenes recorded a 0.67 ERA as a closer). Skenes' COVID-19-shortened senior season was much more of the same; he surrendered just one earned run in 27 innings, punching out 32 batters. Skenes was similarly prolific at the plate, slapping three moonshots over the fence while posting an OPS above 1.000.

    Paul Skenes GPA

Skenes was more than just an athlete during his high school days. He was also an impressive student, graduating with a 4.76 GPA.
