Steelers Playmaker Named ‘Must Watch’ Player In Training Camp

A lot of attention has been given to the Pittsburgh Steelers offense this offseason, and rightfully so. Trying to get on track, they made an unprecedented move, overhauling the quarterback depth chart.

There isn’t a single quarterback from last season’s team remaining on the roster. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields have replaced Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.

Their quarterback battle will be one many people are keeping a close eye on. Wilson is the starter heading into training camp, but Fields is going to push him hard for the job.

Even if Fields doesn’t land the starting job, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith should look to get him involved. Some packages each week should be used to take advantage of the dynamic athleticism he brings to the field.

But, he isn’t the only offensive player worth keeping an eye on in training camp. There are other roles up for grabs, such as the No. 2 wide receiver role behind George Pickens.

One player who will be looking to seize that role is rookie Roman Wilson. A third-round pick out of Michigan, Wilson is someone Rob Gregson of A To Z Sports believes is a must-watch for Steelers fans in training camp.

“The Steelers have yet to answer who will be the starting wideout opposite of George Pickens. Trade rumors, free agent signings, you name it, it’s been floated as a possibility for Pittsburgh.

But at this point, it’s more likely that Pittsburgh rolls with their current crop of pass catchers, none of whom produce more intrigue than rookie Roman Wilson. The rest of the group is widely known, though Calvin Austin III might be in store for a breakout year.

Regardless, if Wilson is lights out when the pads come on, or unremarkable, it will be telling for the WR room,” Gregson wrote .

The performance of Wilson in training camp could determine how the Steelers address wide receiver heading into the regular season. If he looks ready to handle a large role, the need to add an experienced option diminishes.

There were rumors this offseason linking the Steelers to Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers and Courtland Sutton of the Denver Broncos. Acquiring either of the 49ers duo would be costly, in draft picks and money.

If Wilson performs at a high level, the coaching staff and patch together things behind him and Pickens. Having a talented pass-catching tight end such as Pat Freiermuth will lessen the need for a wide receiver as well.
