UFL team is betting on Steelers QB-WR hybrid getting cut after selecting him third overall in UFL Draft

The United Football League or UFL, held their draft today and the Arlington Renegades decided to draft Steelers rookie and UDFA John Rhys Plumlee.

Plumlee, who played QB at UCF, is about to head to Pittsburgh Steelers training camp as a QB-WR hybrid.

But if he doesn't make the final 53, he can already bank on his backup plan of spinning Pigskins down in Texas.

Arlington Renegades select John Rhys Plumlee 3rd overall in UFL Draft

Plumlee was the Steelers' highest-paid undrafted free agent after a collegiate career that saw him rack up yardage and scores both at Ole Miss and UCF, recording nearly 6,000 passing yards and over 30 TDs to pair with nearly 3,000 yards and 30 TDs from scrimmage as rusher and receiver.

So it's safe to say that he is a versatile weapon that will fit well into the UFL. But for now, he's a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers and is working on beating out veteran Kyle Allen for the third QB spot.

“You maximize your opportunity, whatever that looks like,” Plumlee told reporters during rookie minicamp. “If you get the last rep at practice, and you get only one, you make the most of it.”

Plumlee will have to make the most of every rep he can receive, and those will be minimal given the state of the depth chart . But for Plumlee, he knew that when he signed with Pittsburgh and still decided the Steelers would be his best bet.

“When you think about the Steelers, it’s the toughness, hard-nosed football, the winning mentality they have,” Plumlee said. “That is one of the things that drove me here. With their belief in me, that is one thing that was super appealing. You want to go somewhere you feel like you’re wanted, and I feel like I’m wanted. That’s why I’m here...

"...Pittsburgh believed in me as a quarterback, and that’s why I’m here.”

For Plumlee, the news is great. He knows that should Pittsburgh opt to go with all veterans in the QB room and stick with their current crop of WRs, he has a nice gig waiting for him as a QB in the second-best football league in the world.

But for now, Plumlee, (like the rest of the Steelers roster ) has his eyes set on Latrobe as they report in one week.
