On Tuesday night, Pirates rookie Paul Skenes became the first pitcher to start an All-Star Game the year after he was drafted.

Skenes faces four batters in a scoreless inning, throwing 16 pitches (11 strikes).

He’s only made 11 starts in the MLB and with a 1.90 ERA and 89 strikeouts, Skenes was good enough to start in an All-Star Game.

The inning of work was such a historic moment, the hat he wore on the mound is on its way to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

The Hall of Fame posted a photo on social media of Skenes and a representative from the HOF holding the hat that will be displayed in Cooperstown.

It’s only been 11 starts and Skenes already has a piece (a very small piece) from his career in the Hall of Fame.

At .500, the Pirates begin the second half with a real chance to make a run for the postseason.

They’ll need Skenes to continue to be a rare pitching gem.
