NFL analyst predicts Pittsburgh Steelers sign QB to long-term deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers ' long-term situation at the quarterback position is completely up in the air, but one NFL analyst feels they know the outcome.

This year's quarterbacks room consists of veteran Russell Wilson and dual-threat Justin Fields, who are each on one-year deals. It's very possible Wilson will not be under center for more than this season, leaving the Steelers with the option of either re-signing Fields or using a high draft pick to secure their future.

Sports Illustrated's Connor Orr is placing his trust in the former Chicago Bear, whom he projects to sign a Baker Mayfield-like contract (three years, $100 million) after this season.

"Way-too-early-prediction: Fields will re-sign with the Steelers on a Baker Mayfield–style three-year deal at season’s end," Orr wrote.

The difference between the two is Mayfield had a prove-it season in Tampa Bay, which Fields may not get in Pittsburgh. If Fields is unable to beat Wilson for the starting job, fans could see the 25-year-old on the sideline for much of the year.

Considering head coach Mike Tomlin's preference to run the ball over the passing game, Fields will at least find usage in certain option plays with Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

He must make the most of each moment on the field as he prepares to hit free agency next offseason.
