While C.J. Stroud represented the Ohio State Buckeyes program well in his first year, his talented predecessor hasn't been as fortunate. Former Chicago Bears first-round pick Justin Fields is looking to find his footing with the Pittsburgh Steelers now. A fantastic Buckeye, the optimism around Fields is rising.

First, Fields must beat out fellow newcomer Russell Wilson before becoming a franchise icon. However, Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski thinks that will happen for Fields this fall. His 10 bold projections piece includes a nod to Fields becoming the long-term answer for Pittsburgh.

Russell Wilson holds the QB1 position at the Pittsburgh Steelers, a fact that is widely accepted. However, given the unpredictable nature of an NFL season, changes and surprises are inevitable.

After being traded from the Chicago Bears for what could metaphorically be described as a mere bag of balls, Justin Fields may have seen his time as a franchise quarterback come to an end. Nevertheless, the potential that captured everyone's attention over three seasons is still apparent.

Upon joining his new team, Fields wasn't guaranteed a starting spot. The Steelers even opted not to exercise the 25-year-old's fifth-year rookie contract option. Despite this, Fields is aware that the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh is far from resolved, and he's determined to compete for more time on the field.

"I'm definitely competing," Fields told reporters in May. "I think Russ knows that we're competing against each other every day. Him being out there for me, that helps me getting better, especially each other.

"I definitely don't have the mindset of me just sitting all year. I'm coming in every day giving it all I got and pushing him to be his best, and he's pushing me to be my best each and every day."

Given the scenario where Wilson and Fields are both on one-year contracts following their less-than-ideal situations, it's challenging to declare a clear favorite between them. Wilson boasts a wealth of experience and a successful track record, yet he will turn 36 this season, which is a consideration.

On the other hand, Fields brings a different dynamic to the quarterback position with his athleticism, potentially transforming the offense dramatically.

The Steelers are at a crucial juncture where they must thoroughly assess their quarterback situation before the upcoming offseason. Fields, in particular, offers considerable potential to evolve beyond a mere gamble and showcase the promise of becoming a significant asset for the team.
