Analyst says the Steelers are getting it all wrong with Justin Fields: 'He's more than a scratch-off ticket'

With the Pittsburgh Steelers on the eve of reporting to camp, the back-to-school feeling is in the air.

Come Thursday, the team's 2024 NFL season will begin, as cleats touch grass in Latrobe.

And while there are plenty of questions to be answered, it's clear who is going to start at QB for Pittsburgh .

That would be Russell Wilson, with Justin Fields waiting in the wings.

Bleacher Report thinks that's a bad idea.

    Should Justin Fields start?

Russell Wilson is QB1 in Pittsburgh for the Steelers. No one is denying this fact. But an NFL season is long and plenty of twists and turns occur along the way.Justin Fields may no longer be a franchise quarterback after being traded from the Chicago Bears for the equivalent of a bag of balls. Still, the potential that had people intrigued for three seasons remains evident.

Considering the setup with both Wilson and Fields playing on one-year deals after coming off disappointing situations, no significant edge should be awarded to either. Wilson is the more experienced veteran, with plenty of success in his background. But he also turns 36 during the regular season and Fields is a different type of athlete at the position, who can completely change the offense's complexion.

The Steelers will need to find out what they have at the game's most important position before next offseason. Fields still presents significant upside, with the ability to become something more than a simple scratch-off lottery ticket.

    - Brent Sobleski, Bleacher Report

I believe Pittsurgh's plan is simple. You trot out the veteran looking to revive his career, hope he plays to a serviceable standard, win 9-10 games, and try and make a playoff run before determining the next steps in their QB situation.

If Wilson is a disaster in the early portion of the season, then Pittsburgh likely turns to Fields down the backstretch, though placing a QB who's been on the bench all season into the hardest stretch of games the league may have ever seen probably isn't smart.

But should Fields succeed, he's your answer heading into 2025 and beyond considering his youth. And if both are sub-par, well no big deal because they are on one-year prove-it deals to begin with.

So all options are on the table in Pittsburgh.
