    Rumor: Pirates turned down trade that would've sent Bednar to O's

    With the MLB deadline date quickly approaching (July 30), Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington spoke to the media on Wednesday ahead of the Pirates rubber match against the St. Louis Cardinals.

    “We can make a move any time it becomes apparent it’s the right move,” said Cherington. “Like, there are things we could’ve already done, there are things we could do today, if we wanted to, but we haven’t found, yet, the match that makes sense for us.”

    One of those moves that could’ve been made is rumored to involve Pirates closer David Bednar.

    93.7 The Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi says:

    The Pirates recently turned down a trade that would have sent David Bednar to the Orioles. For Baltimore top prospect Coby Mayo. Top 25 prospect in baseball. 22 HRs in minors. Plays 1B and 3B. Very interesting.

    Again, that is a rumor and not a report from Poni.

    Cherington added that they don’t operating with the notion that they have “untouchable” players.
