LATROBE, PA (93.7 The Fan) – Russell Wilson didn’t give a time for when he will practice, but said his calf tightness felt better on Friday and he expects to go through his first Steelers training camp on-field workout soon.

The 35-year-old said he tweaked his calf during the sled push which happened as part of new drills during the first-day run tests on Wednesday. Wilson said it was the fourth or fifth time they did it and he said he ‘felt a little something’.

He said sometimes things happen, but he feels good now and is getting a lot of work on the side including to oft-mentioned mental reps that players describe when injured.

It’s nothing to panic about or too worried about at all ,” Wilson said, adding he would prefer to be practicing today and is good enough to play if it were a game. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin still said Wilson’s status is ‘day-to-day’.

“He’s got a minor thing that I don’t to become a major thing,” Tomlin said. “I’d rather deal with short-term misery.”

Wilson said he’s been super intentional to make sure and get extra work. He feels he got a lot of time with the players in the offseason and he feels confident with his teammates and throwing with them. He mentioned they’ve had time after practice and meetings to get to know each other better here as well.

“It’s great because I get to go through a little adversity and respond to it,” Wilson said Friday. “I think for me I’ve always been able to respond to adversity in the right way.”

Beyond the injury and adversity, there is something he is really enjoying about coming out to St. Vincent College for training camp.

“My favorite part of training camp, beside throwing touchdowns, winning, the competitiveness, is the kids, honestly,” Wilson said. “To see the kids out here and having fun. Them wearing my jersey, TJ Watt’s jersey, Cam Heyward, whoever’s jersey or whatever black and gold they are wearing. That’s the fun part of it, they get to see us.”

“I remember when I was a young kid like this, hoping to get out here one day. It’s all possible with God, hard work, great sense of urgency, it’s possible. I remember being (behind the fence) back in the day and now I’m between the white lines. It’s a special thing and never take it for granted.”
