Steelers' Roman Wilson gets rave reviews after 3rd training camp practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing questions about their wide receiver corps. ahead of the 2024 campaign, as the team lacks established options at the position outside of George Pickens.

The biggest move Pittsburgh made this offseason was the selection of wide receiver Roman Wilson in the 2024 NFL Draft. As of right now, Wilson, who works out of the slot, could earn himself the role of the team's No. 2 option at the position in his first season, assuming he can prove he's ready for such a job.

Well, Wilson is making progress on that goal after the third training camp practice on Saturday in which he shined, according to beat writers on the ground. Here's what The Athletic's Mark Kaboly wrote:

Rookie receiver Roman Wilson had easily his best day of training camp Saturday, showing that he’s not only dependable but also versatile. He made a different variety of catches from Fields and Kyle Allen on multiple route concepts.

One play that stood out was when the Steelers were in a 3×1 set with Wilson in the slot to the right of Fields in a third-and-8 situation. Wilson blew past rookie slot corner Beanie Bishop Jr. and made a twisting catch near the sideline for 28 yards. It was a perfect throw by Fields, but Wilson’s speed was undeniable. Later, he ran a crosser from the slot and was able to turn it up the field for 20 yards. Maybe the Steelers don’t need to add a WR2 after all?

But Kaboly wasn't the only one who was impressed with what Wilson put out there on Saturday.

“That boy a dog," fellow wide receiver Calvin Austin said of Wilson, per Amanda Godsey . "I said that back in OTAs. He’s very competitive. He’s asking the right questions. He’s pushing himself out there on the field. He’s going to be a big addition to our offense.”

If the Steelers don't make a big trade for a receiver, Wilson's development becomes even more crucial. Granted, it's always risky to depend a lot on a rookie, but the Steelers may have no choice.
