Steelers Training Camp Takeaways: Justin Fields saves Russell Wilson's job, rookies steal the show on day four

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up Week 1 of training camp in Latrobe on Sunday, with an off day on Monday before the real fun begins on Tuesday.

That's because the next time Pittsburgh is on the field, it will be in pads, meaning real football will be played.

But before we get there, let's take a look back at Sunday's practice in Latrobe.

Russell Wilson's Calf Improves, Fields struggles

Though Wilson has increasingly shown progress since Thursday, even taking actual drops and moving on the calf a little heavier on Sunday, the fact that he's missed the entire first week of practice is somewhat concerning.

Wilson noted that he thought he could practice Thursday, and that he felt good, with Mike Tomlin saying he was held out for precautionary reasons .

Mike Tomlin said after practice that he expects Wilson to work into team periods on Tuesday. Questions are starting to arise about the severity of the injury, how it occurred , and what it means for the QB situation, but it could be all thrown out the window come next week.

Fields was inconsistent throughout the four-day stretch, but especially on Sunday when he threw one interception and should have had another had it not been dropped, per reports.

Now, it was always unlikely that Mike Tomlin would unseat Russell Wilson from his pole position, but if Fields was undeniable over the first four days, he may have thought about the rep distribution a little more.

Tuesday will still be interesting nonetheless.

    Rookies Steal the Show

It started early and by accident, but when rookie first-round pick Troy Fautanu replaced Broderick Jones after an injury in: "Seven Shots" (Jones would return next play) he made the most of it, reportedly knocking back T.J. Watt and stunning the All-Pro.

That was enough for Pittsburgh to keep him in the first team during 11 vs. 11 drills, with Fautanu getting his first real burn of camp. The big rookie ended practice with the first team as well (though he did have to take a lap for a false start). It has to be noted that there are no pads on, but the early returns on Fautanu are positive.

Payton Wilson decided to join the party, making it back-to-back days that the rookie duo of Wilson-Wilson has stood out. Payton (the LB) reportedly had a nice forced fumble after punching the ball out of the arms of Pat Freiermuth on a crosser.

Between his speed and tenacity, Wilson is going to find his way on the field one way or another.

Through the first four days, there has been a clear winner at the slot corner position in terms of first-team reps and that would be rookie UDFA Beanie Bishop. With Cam Sutton not available until Week 10, it's clear that Bishop is the UDFA with the best chance of making the team.

    Injury Notes

    • NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported that QB Russell Wilson will have his calf re-examined on Monday, with a decision on his status coming after that
    • LG Isaac Seumalo returned on Sunday after a perceived veteran rest day on Saturday
    • Returner Cordarrelle Patterson was seen riding the stationary bike as he works back from a hamstring injury that placed him on the Non-Football Injury list
    • TE Rodney Williams did not participate in Sunday's practice after an awkward fall on Saturday, but his arm was reportedly not in a sling.
    • WR Van Jefferson was not seen practicing.
