PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) – The Pittsburgh Pirates waited until the final hour of the MLB trade deadline to make significant moves to improve their roster.
Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington traded for Miami Marlins outfielder Bryan De La Cruz and Toronto Blue Jays utility infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.
Cherington took advantage of the Marlins fire sale to acquire one of the last solid bats available in De La Cruz. The 27-year-old has a .245 batting average this season to go along with 18 home runs and 51 runs batted in, which would make him tied for first in homers and third in RBIs on the Pirates.
The team acquired De La Cruz in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jun-Seok Shim and infielder/catcher Garret Forrester, who are the 17th and 18th ranked prospects in Pittsburgh’s system. Both prospects were still below the AA level.
De La Cruz still has three years of control after this season. Meanwhile, Kiner-Falefa has one year left on his contract following this year.

The versatile infielder has a .292 batting average this season, which would be the highest on the Pirates among qualified hitters. He also has seven home runs and 33 RBIs this year.
According to Toronto, Kiner-Falefa was acquired for Pittsburgh’s 29th ranked prospect Charles McAdoo, who was having a standout season in the minor leagues. McAdoo has a .315 batting average, 14 home runs and 62 RBIs between Greensboro and Altoona.
The Pirates also shipped off starting pitcher Martin Perez to the San Diego Padres for left-handed minor-league pitcher Ronaldys Jimenez, according to baseball reporter Francys Romero.
