The restaurant 40 North on Pittsburgh’s North Side is closed, at least temporarily.

A sign on the door Monday reads “Apologies — Unexpected closure in restaurant … re-opening 2-3 weeks after repairs.”

But a social media post with an image of a single red flower from executive chef Beth Zozula said Sunday was the last day and that she appreciates all the support the past three years.

The website said it’s closed “till further notice.“

Zozula said she appreciated the opportunity and has gotten “to work with an amazing staff and farmers and other vendors who are all part of a team in the restaurant business.”

“I care about all of the people who I have connected with and I care about their livelihoods,” she said. “As a chef you can have a family in the restaurant … and I will have that family forever. I feel lucky to have gotten to work with a wonderful team. We did some incredibly special things. I am going to miss that.”

It was the longest restaurant in that space, opening more than three years ago, said Zozula, a California native who lives in Greensburg. Zozula moved to Pennsylvania when she was 7. She was instrumental in the restaurant opening three years ago and she created a menu of appetizers, salads and sandwiches and inspired by cuisine from all over the world.

The restaurant’s location is 40 W. North Ave., near Federal Street, on Pittsburgh’s North Side. It was open Wednesday through Sunday. It is housed inside the Alphabet City venue of City of Asylum, an organization that provides sanctuary to endangered literary writers and offers free literary, arts and humanities programs.

Brugge on North previously operated in the Alphabet City space, but it closed amid the 2020 pandemic restrictions.

Calls to the owner and Alphabet City were not returned.
