The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to face the Houston Texans in their preseason opener with Justin Fields as their starting quarterback.

Head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Russell Wilson, who has missed much of training camp due to a calf injury, will not dress for the game, solidifying Fields as QB1 for the matchup.

Fields, who has taken the majority of first-team reps during training camp, will get his first opportunity to play at Acrisure Stadium as the starter. Working closely with key players like George Pickens and Van Jefferson, Fields has shown promising progress. Although he was initially listed as the backup on the team's depth chart, the open competition for the starting role means Fields' performance against the Texans could be pivotal.

Backing up Fields will be Kyle Allen and John Rhys Plumlee. While Plumlee has a chance to make the roster, Allen is expected to secure the QB3 spot. Consequently, Fields is likely to see extensive playing time in the opener, with Allen and Plumlee splitting reps in the second half.

The Steelers will rest several veteran players for the preseason game, including T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alex Highsmith, Patrick Queen, and Isaac Seumalo. Typically, these veterans still participate in warm-ups to simulate game day conditions without the risk of injury.

Under the new offensive system led by coordinator Arthur Smith, most offensive skill players are expected to see action, though the duration of their playtime remains undetermined. This game will provide a crucial opportunity for Fields to showcase his abilities and stake his claim as the starting quarterback for the regular season.

The Steelers kick off against the Texans at 7 P.M. ET on Friday, August 9, at Acrisure Stadium. This is the first of their three preseason games, leading up to their regular season opener in Atlanta for Week 1.
