Underclassmen Silvio Giardina from Pittston Area and Jake Snyder from Wyoming Area were among 24 District 2 players honored when the Pennsylvania Baseball Coaches Association announced its inaugural all-state team Monday.
Both players were second-team selections.
Giardina, a junior who has already committed to play National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I baseball at Lehigh University, is an infielder on the Class 5A team.
Snyder, one of just two District 2 sophomores to be recognized, is an outfielder on the Class 4A team.
Along with being the offensive leaders, both also pitched for their championship teams.
Giardina led the District 2 Class 5A champion Patriots in batting average (.449), on-base percentage (.567), slugging percentage (.667), doubles (12), RBI (29), walks (15) and stolen bases (15). He also scored 24 times in 23 games.
On the mound, Giardina threw a team-high 30 innings and led the team in wins, going 6-1 with a 2.57 earned run average.
Similarly, Snyder led the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champion Warriors in batting average (.439), on-base percentage (.576), slugging percentage (.591), triples (four), runs scored (34), walks (18) and stolen bases (20).
Snyder went 2-3 with a 4.08 ERA as the third-busiest pitcher on the Wyoming Area staff.
SOFTBALL
Wyoming Area shortstop Addison Gaylord and designated player Maggie Hallman were named to the first team when Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 coaches made their all-star selections.
Pitcher Alexa Gasek and outfielder Arianna Gaylord represented the Lady Warriors on the second team. Renee Haddock and Morgan Slusser received honorable mention.
Lake-Lehman pitcher Hannah Chipego was named Player of the Year and teammate Kirsten Finarelli was chosen as Most Valuable Player.
