BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — What’s the latest on the plan to redevelop the Brooklyn Marine Terminal?

The New York City Economic Development Corporation held a webinar Monday night. It was the first informational session since Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans to create the “Harbor of the Future” on the 122-acre waterfront site in May.

Rep. Dan Goldman, who represents parts of Brooklyn, is the chairman of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal Task Force. He told attendees on the webinar the plan is to have a modern marine port with a “blue highway” for freight ships to more easily transport goods to the five boroughs.

“That’s going to be the centerpiece of this development, and any extra space will be up for discussion. We are very focused on making sure the community is actively engaged,” Goldman said.

“The city is committed to maintaining maritime port functions at BMT, so when we talk about housing, or we talk about the development of a mixed-use community, we are talking about job-generating uses in addition to any housing opportunities,” Mikelle Adgate, with the NYC Economic Development Corporation, said. “There may be opportunities to cross-subsidize affordable housing and port infrastructure with market-rate development, but that is something we will be talking about with all the stakeholders as we go through the process.”

The EDC said the project’s planning and community engagement portion will last through the end of 2024, with a final presentation in 2025.

The next opportunity to get more information is Aug. 23, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at a drop-in booth at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 Ferry Landing.
