“The shot went inside the wall. It was like several shots,” Willy, a witness, said.

Willy said he and other maintenance workers were ambushed. Dodging gunfire as a gang of masked moped riders tried to steal the superintendent’s moped off the curb.

“Was like seven (scooters) blue, white and black one that you saw,” Willy added.

Despite coming under fire, they physically fought back, scaring one suspect off, who left his getaway vehicle behind. But now police have it as evidence.

“They left because we pushed him and then he started running,” Willy told PIX11 News.

Despite the hail of bullets, no one was directly hit.

When police arrived, they found the FedEx employee, 20, with a graze from a bullet on their back, according to officials. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Police said the suspects were described as two people wearing all black with ski masks. They left on foot after failing to steal the moped.

PIX11 News reached out for comment from FedEx, who said:

“We are grateful our team member was not seriously injured.”

“These illegal bikes are the number one quality of life issue in the city,” Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

That’s why police have been focused on finding the illegal ones menacing New Yorkers and ultimately crushing them. Police said the criminals are more nimble on mopeds, but they expect to seize 30,000 this year.

“Not only are they illegally registered, there’s murderers, shooters, robbers on these bikes, putting our public in peril,” Chell said.
