The youth of today are the future of our sport, and we appreciate the fire these young rippers bring to the world. From freeride to XC, the youngsters are on fire and doing exciting things. The Kids Are Alright will be a running column showcasing the up-and-comers who are keeping things fresh, dialed, sick, and whatever else the kids are saying these days. If you want to nominate someone, please, shoot me an email !

First up, we’ve got Jonny Davie out of Pocatello, Idaho.

Jonny is an absolute ripper on the bike and a great person in general. I sat down for a quick chat with Jonny to learn a bit more about him so we can all get to know this up-and-coming shredder from Idaho a little better.

Tell our readers a little more about who you are and what type of rider you are?

My name is Jonny Davie, I’m a 16 year old high school student, bike mechanic, and freeride mountain biker from Pocatello, Idaho.

Where did you grow up ?

    Idaho. In Pocatello, and McCammon.

Where do you live now ?

    Living in McCammon, ID.

When did you find the love for the bike, and what made you stick with it?

Winter 2019 - I found Seth's bike hacks on YouTube, and then COVID hit and gave me a ton of time off to ride a ton! It was then that it really stuck, but when the training wheels came off in 1st grade. The day they came off, It unlocked a whole new world for me.

What is the earliest memory you have about bikes?

Training wheels coming off for sure. That feeling of being the “big kid” and the freedom I felt to explore under my own power.

How vital is the support from family to keep racing? Would you be where you are today without them ?

Incredibly important. My mom shows so much support and this wouldnt be possible without her. Also, my older cousin kind of got me started and I probably wouldn’t have really started riding without him.

    Favorite Place to Ride?

Teton Pass for sure. It has a little bit of everything and I have learned so much from riding there. The vibes are unmatched, and the community is so cool. I can’t wait to get back out there. I also love I street in SLC. Not picky, though, anywhere can be fun if you’re on a bike.

    Favorite Ride Snack ?

Shout out to peach wheelies from Maverick and peach Monster before a ride. I’m kinda the peach guy.

Do you ride with music, podcast?

Alone, usually with music. With friends, I like to socialize and dont want to be that guy with headphones on. But definitely love music if I’m riding solo .

Current Soundtrack? Do you have a favorite album/song/playlist that gets you hyped?

Lots of The Story So Far and Blink-182. I actually just saw Blink in concert and that was amazing.

What is the first thing you do after a ride?

Get the music going again, drink water, and scrounge whatever snacks I can find in the truck.

Do you have any post/pre-ride rituals?

Check the bike, and make sure there are no squeaks or weird noises. Also knee pads and a safety check. It feels alien if I ride without pads!

    Dream Event to Ride?

Something like Darkfest, any of the Fest Series events, or Crankworx. If I could make that happen, I’d be so hyped.

Biggest Inspiration (This can be another rider or athlete, or anyone/anything)?

Mom is definitely at the top of the ranks there. She does everything for me and my brother; she's the best. If I had to choose riders, it would have to be Josh Hoult. He has always been super nice and went out of his way to say hi and introduce himself. Also, Kurtis Downs and Brady Tweedy.

What is your favorite aspect of the sport?

The self-discipline I have learned, along with the sense of freedom and community it gives me. Everyone is on the same team and supports each other for the most part.

Least Favorite Part of the Sport?

Fear after injury. I was out a lot of the year last year with PCS (Post Concussion Syndrome), and now I'm super cautious of that. I got a concussion skiing, then concussed at a tramp park, then at Woodward, so there were 3 in a super short timeline, and it really scared me.

    Favorite Non-Cycling Sport to Watch/Play?

Local Baseball, but outside of riding bikes, I love skiing. Not much of a team sports guy.

Your greatest Achievement on the Bike?

Confidence building. I can go to most places and feel confident enough to ride all the features and follow people on gnarly lines. I also really love being able to tow people in and share the experience with people so they can progress!

What are you looking forward to the most in the next 12 months?

Greenriver classic in October, Boise, and Teton. Mostly just looking forward to travel and progression. Having fun and not getting hurt. I’m not much of a planner.

Anyone you want to thank or give a special shoutout?

Definitely my mom. Eastfork Bikes in Pocatello is the best shop around. Ty is super rad and lets me work as much as I need to and always hooks me up with gear and parts I need. Shout out to Revel Bikes and the team there. They have been super rad to work with!
