Agencies investigating card skimmers at Ingles around the area

Rockmart Police is among three agencies who are currently involved in trying to determine who placed a card skimmer machine at Ingle’s grocery store locations around the area.

Rockmart’s Ingle’s – along with at least one in Bartow County and another in Temple – were targeted by at least two individuals who placed the skimmer on top of normal card machines.

The one in Rockmart appeared to go into place on August 20, and was discovered on August 22.

Rockmart Police is still investigating, but believe that at least two of the individuals (Bartow County and Temple both posted photos in those links above) have been identified and are following up.

Card skimmers are one of the latest tools that those seeking to commit credit card fraud use to gain access to card and pin numbers from those making legitimate purchases at stores. They get placed on card machines with public access – like on pumps at gas stations or grocery stores – and then the information can be wireless transmitted to the actors who have put them in place.

It only takes seconds to install a skimmer, usually after a clerk has been distracted allowing the change to the regular point of sale credit card machine to go unnoticed.

Anyone who made purchases over a two-day period at Ingle’s in Rockmart should immediately check their bank accounts to see if any unauthorized transactions have been made.

Those who find them should immediately report the fraudulent activity to their banking institution, and then contact Rockmart Police Detective Frank Golden as the case remains under investigation.
