Port Arthur LNG project moving forward with recent agreement

The announcement of a non-binding purchase agreement for liquefied natural gas from the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 expansion project shows positive growth for the area and beyond.

Sempra, the parent company of Port Arthur LNG and Aramco, made the recent announcement of the non-binding Heads of Agreement for a 20-year sale and purchase agreement for LNG offtake of 5.0 million tonnes per annum from the PA LNG Phase 2 expansion project.

“Sempra Infrastructure’s projects are set to bring long-term economic growth, job creation, and community investments, making it a pivotal contributor to Port Arthur, Texas, and the surrounding communities,” an official with Sempra said.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to have 6,000 jobs at peak construction and create approximately 200 permanent jobs in the Port Arthur community.

“The Phase 2 project is expected to build on this success and commitment to the local community, adding an additional 3,500 construction jobs and an additional 60 permanent jobs,” the official said.

Aramco Upstream President Nasir K. Naimi said they are excited to take this next step into the LNG sector.

“As a potential strategic partner in the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, Aramco is well placed to grow its gas portfolio with the aim of meeting the world’s growing need for lower-carbon sources of energy. This agreement is a major step in Aramco’s strategy to become a leading global LNG player,” Al-Naimi said in a news release.

Sempra Chairman and CEO Jeffrey W. Martin said the planned expansion of Port Arthur LNG would help facilitate the broad distribution of U.S. natural gas across global energy markets.

“By expanding the global reach of the Port Arthur LNG facility, we have the opportunity to improve energy security, while providing a lower-carbon alternative to coal for electricity production,” Martin said in a news release.

The Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project is under construction and consists of two trains and two storage tanks and associated facilities. Phase 2 is an expansion of the site to include up to two additional trains capable of producing up to 13 Mtpa.
