    Port Arthur Mayor issues voluntary evacuation for Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=1KBFQA_0uIK6iwg00 Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie has issued a voluntary evacuation order for residents in Sabine Pass and Pleasure Island Sunday afternoon. Bartie has been in contact with the National Weather Service, Jefferson County emergency Management officials, Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick and Port Arthur Emergency Management team regarding Tropical Storm Beryl. Bartie said there is the possibility of 3-5 foot storm surge which will affect low lying areas.
    National Weather Service:

    As of 6:40 p.m., Beryl was approaching the central Texas Gulf Coast with maximum winds of 65 mph.

    Beryl is expected to continue to strengthen this evening and overnight becoming a Category 1 hurricane with winds 85 mph prior to landfall.

    Landfall is expected to occur near Bay City very early Monday morning.

    Disaster declaration:

    Additionally, Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick has issued a disaster declaration in anticipation of Hurricane Beryl. This proactive measure is aimed at ensuring the safety and preparedness of our community as we face potential impacts from the Hurricane.

    Branick urged all residents to take this declaration seriously and prepare accordingly. Key preparations include securing loose objects outdoors, stocking up on essential supplies, and staying informed through official channels.

    “Emergency management teams are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond swiftly to any developments.,” Branick said. “The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we encourage everyone to heed all warnings. ”

    At present, the forecast calls for 2-6 inches of rain over an approximate 36-hour period. Storm surge is likely to be a concern in Sabine Pass and along the coast up to 5 feet above ground level. The strongest winds are expected to be along the coast, and there may be gusts of up to 40 mph.
