Hotspot reignites fire at U.S. Farathane warehouse in Port Huron

PORT HURON — Firefighters were back on scene at the U.S. Farathane warehouse Wednesday morning after a hotspot ignited another fire at the site.

Port Huron Fire Department Chief Corey Nicholson had said in a news release that the fire department had suspended continuous firefighting efforts as of 10 a.m. Fire crews were called back shortly after, and the smoke was once again rising from the warehouse at 10:45 a.m. Part of Beard Street was reclosed.

Nicholson said there may be multiple hotspots and smoldering remains of fire like this over the next few days as cleanup crews continue to excavate the warehouse, which held finished automotive parts.

"I expect we'll be out there multiple times before this is done," Nicholson said.

The warehouse fire was first reported Sunday morning. Firefighters from across the county have worked around the clock for the past four days excavating and demolishing parts of the warehouse to allow firefighters to reach the blaze.

Nicholson said the fire department is working on a fence to set up a perimeter around the warehouse. The firedepartment will continue to respond if and when hot spots flare up. There may be increases in smoke activity as flare ups happen, as was seen at the warehouse Wednesday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Port Huron Fire Marshall's office.
