PORT ST. LUCIE − The body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered Tuesday afternoon from the St. Lucie River, after he and two other youths, reportedly fishing, attempted to cross the river, according to Port St. Lucie police.
About 12:30 p.m. or 12:45 p.m., police were called about a possible drowning at an area referred to as the Twin Bridges on Southeast Port St. Lucie Boulevard just east of Southeast Floresta Drive, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson. Mesiti said shortly before 4 p.m. that a body was recovered submerged under the bridge.
The deceased was identified as Ja-Quon Shane Hosein Madaris, of Port St. Lucie, Mesiti stated.

Acting Police Chief Richard Del Toro said three teen boys were attempting to cross the river. He said they had been in shallow water, though the depth increases to about 10 to 12 feet. He said the teen that went missing didn’t know how to swim or float.
Police reported the three "attempted to cross the perimeter of a patch of mangroves when the water became too deep for the 16-year-old and he submerged under water and failed to resurface."
A variety of law enforcement resources were employed in searching for the teen, who was found by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office dive team. He was recovered submerged under the bridge.
Mesiti said police used drones, a boat and a helicopter from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office as part of the search.
