PORT ST. LUCIE − A man who reportedly pointed a pistol at his head outside a bar was injured by gunfire after being tackled, a police spokesperson said Monday.

The incident occurred before 6 p.m. Saturday at City Limits Sports Bar in the 900 block of Southwest Gatlin Boulevard, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, Port St. Lucie Police spokesperson.

Mesiti said the 56-year-old man was inside the bar and began making suicidal statements while consuming alcohol.

He exited the bar and was seen pointing a pistol to his head. Witnesses intervened and tackled the man. In the process the handgun discharged, striking the man in the leg, Mesiti said.

Witnesses used a belt as a tourniquet on the man’s leg. He was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce with non life-threatening injuries.

Police submitted paperwork for the man to undergo a psychological evaluation under provisions of the state’s Baker Act.
