In a curious concatenation of crimes, a man who was sleeping in a car he didn’t own was shot at on Woodstock Boulevard near S.E. 42nd Avenue, across the street from the Plaid Pantry store, early Saturday morning, May 25 – and then the vehicle was carjacked by the shooter, leaving the trespasser on the street. Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers were dispatched to this, as a shooting, at 4:31 a.m.

The arriving officers found the victim, who told them that he’d been sleeping in a vehicle that was “not his” when a gunman approached him, and fired a gunshot that smashed a window and showered him with glass shards.

Then, the gun-wielding suspect pulled the victim out of the car, and drove away in it.

Paramedics confirmed that the victim hadn’t actually been shot, and treated him for cuts received from the shattered window glass.

A PPB official said that no arrests have been made in the assault and hijacking; and apparently the person sleeping in somebody else’s car was not arrested for it. But the investigation into the incident is continuing. No word yet on whether the car was recovered – or who actually owned it. Or who the carjacker was. If we learn more we will tell you.

If you have information for the police about any or all of these simultaneous crimes, please e-mail it to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov – directed to the attention of ECST – and refer to Case No. 24-128294.
