PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The costume figure skater Tonya Harding wore in the competition following an assault that made history has been sold.

The red sequined leotard the former Portland figure skater wore at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 7, 1994 — the day after her teammate, Nancy Kerrigan’s, leg was bludgeoned — was purchased for $17,485.20.

Sports memorabilia seller Lelands posted the outfit as part of its 2024 Summer Classic auction, which opened on June 9 and closed on June 29. The costume had a starting bid of $3,000.

Harding later won the national championships in which she wore the costume. According to her handwritten note featured in the listing, she also wore it for the 1993 competition and the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

Kerrigan won a silver medal at the Olympics while recovering from her injuries, while Harding finished in eighth place.

The Olympics in Lillehammer was Harding’s last competition before she was stripped of her national title and received a lifetime ban from U.S. Figure Skating events despite her denying involvement in Kerrigan’s assault.

“I don’t know anything about what’s going on at all,” Harding told KOIN 6 nearly a week after Kerrigan’s attack. “You know, of course I’m gonna cooperate. I mean, I don’t have anything to hide. I want the person to be caught just as much as anyone else does.”

She later admitted that she had learned her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and bodyguard Shawn Eckardt — who have since changed their names — hired an assailant to attack Kerrigan.

In March 1994, Harding agreed to a plea bargain and was convicted of hindering prosecution. She was sentenced to three years of probation and a $100,000 fine.

Her side of the infamous story was featured in “I, Tonya” starring Margot Robbie. The 2017 film resulted in the actress’ first Golden Globe nomination.
