Officers with the Beaverton Police Department fatally shot a man at Washington Square who was allegedly shoplifting at about 8 p.m. Aug. 26.

The officers were called to respond to a theft at Nordstrom Rack, located at 9175 N.W. Cascade Ave. in Beaverton. Employees allegedly saw 39-year-old Portland resident Jacob Bundy stealing from the store. He then exited the store as the officers were approaching, according to a press release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

“As officers attempted to detain him, Bundy pulled out a handgun. After a struggle in which Bundy fired his gun, Bundy was shot by police. Officers and emergency medical personnel provided aid to Bundy, but he died at the scene. The involved officers sustained minor injuries,” the release stated.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave, as dictated by standard protocol, according to the release. The officers names were not given, and the release stated that additional details would not be provided.

The Washington County Major Crimes Team, led by the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, were called to investigate the shooting. According to the release, investigators found that the gun Bundy had and the motorcycle he allegedly drove to the store were both reported stolen from Washington County and Vancouver, Washington, respectively.

It’s been almost exactly a year since the last time an officer in Washington County killed a resident during a law enforcement operation. The most recent fatal shooting occurred last September, when Hillsboro officers shot and killed 39-year-old Hillsboro resident Richard Herinckx.

Initial reports stated that while officers were at Herinckx’s home to serve a search warrant, he fired a gun at them, causing officers to fatally shoot him. However, review of the officers’ body camera footage showed that Herinckx pointed the loaded gun, but did not fire before officers shot him.
