Rip current alert: Seacoast lifeguards save dozens in wake of Hurricane Ernesto

By Shawn P. Sullivan, Portsmouth Herald,

Greetings! Welcome to another dispatch from your Coast Star Connection!

While the summer is winding down, the local news is doing anything but. Here are the highlights from another busy week in our Coast Star territory . . .

    Rip Current Alert

Lifeguards and first responders in the southern regions of Maine and New Hampshire are urging beachgoers to beware of the power of rip currents in the wake of Hurricane Ernesto, which whipped up waters along the East Coast this past weekend.

A New Principal for Kennebunk High

When freshmen report to Kennebunk High School for their first day of class after Labor Day, they won’t be the only ones to be a new face at the place. Their principal will be a newcomer, just like them.

RSU 21 announced Tuesday that Scott Tombleson is the new principal of Kennebunk High School.

    Minority Report

Nope: This article is not about that blockbuster movie Steven Spielberg made with Tom Cruise. Instead, it's about two dissenters on the Kennebunk Charter Commission who are hoping voters will take their opposing opinions into account as they prepare to vote on a new charter at the polls in November.

    Cue that 'Rocky' theme!

A night of amateur boxing bouts is set for the Sanford Veterans Memorial Gym on Saturday, Aug. 24 – and if the event is a knockout, the venue could become the home of future Northern New England Golden Gloves tournaments.

Jass Boxing, a nonprofit organization based in Berwick, is presenting the event. Doors will open that evening at 5:30 p.m. The first bell of the first bout will ring at 7 p.m.

    Capturing Kennebunkport

“Reflections: Volume II” is a new book filled with the photography of local artist Bob Dennis, who captures the sites and seasons of Kennebunkport in all their colors, festiveness, serenity, and glory. On each page, there are quotes from famous figures and poems by local writers. While Dennis snapped those photos, it’s Thomas Bradbury, the executive director of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, who added the quotes and poems.
