PORTSMOUTH — A garage and three vehicles were destroyed in a Thursday night fire that severely damaged a single-family home at 100 Greenleaf Ave. , according to city Fire Chief William McQuillen.

Firefighters responded about 8:16 p.m. to a garage fire reported by numerous callers, according to the chief. Portsmouth police assisted in evacuating the residents and nearby homes prior to the Fire Department's arrival, he added.

The garage and a breezeway were on fire when crews arrived, and the fire was extending up the outside of the home, which was left uninhabitable by the blaze, McQuillen said. He added firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 40 minutes.

Two occupants of the home evacuated safely, the chief said. One firefighter was sent to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where they were treated for heat exhaustion and released. The chief said the residents of the home were making arrangements to stay elsewhere.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday morning, but is not suspicious, the chief said.

The home's most recent assessed value was $365,000 in 2023, according to city property records. It was built in 1952 and is about 1,800 square feet.
