PORTSMOUTH — A motorcyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries after a Tuesday night accident on Lafayette Road, according to police.

Officers from the Portsmouth Police Department were dispatched at 7:13 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a serious motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Peverly Hill Road and Lafayette Road, police reported Wednesday.

A lone motorcyclist was found to have collided in the roadway with a mid-size SUV, sustaining serious injuries. The operator of the motorcycle was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, while the driver of the mid-size SUV was uninjured, according to police.

The motorcyclist’s speed at the time of the incident is considered to be a factor in the accident, police said, adding it remains under investigation.

The operators involved have not been identified by police.

The city police response to the incident was “extensive” and led to the “prolonged closure” of Lafayette Road southbound from Mirona Road to its intersection with Peverly Hill Road on Tuesday evening, impacting drivers in the area of the crash.

“We understand the impact this closure had on commuting traffic, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” police noted in a Wednesday news release.

The Portsmouth Fire Department assisted city police at the scene and brought the injured motorcyclist to the hospital for treatment.

Members of the public with information about the crash are asked by police to contact Portsmouth officer Zach Brandt by email at brandtz@portsmouthnhpd.gov.
