MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a man’s body was discovered along the shoreline in Portsmouth Monday evening.

Portsmouth Deputy Police Chief Michael Morse told 12 News officers were called to Indian Avenue near the town line around 6 p.m. to investigate reports of a body in the water.

Due to the rocky and dangerous terrain, the Middletown Fire Department responded to the area by boat to pull the body from the water.

The victim, identified as Leonidas Gonzalez, 65, of Marlboro, Massachusetts, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses say Gonzalez was fishing from the shore for several hours and was last seen around 11:30 a.m. when he kept walking on the rocky area to keep fishing.

Gonzalez frequented the area often to go fishing.

His cause of death is unknown at this time, but police say at this time no foul play is suspected.
