    Poll: Vote for the Journal's May 13-19 Athletes of the Week

    As the postseason got underway last week, there were several stellar performances in just about all the sports as teams and athletes closed the regular season on a high or opened the playoffs with a surge.

    Last week's Athlete of the Week winners were Marlboro baseball player Owen Schlagler and Beacon pitcher Mikey Fontaine. Schlagler got 14,797 votes to win the small-schools poll and Fontaine received 7,849 votes to claim the large-schools poll.

    Voting will be open until 6 p.m. Friday. This week's nominees:

    Maia Perillo, John Jay girls track and field

    The senior dominated the pole vault at the Northern Counties Championships, setting a personal best 12 feet, which is the third-best height in the state this season.

    Christian Anderson, Arlington baseball

    He went 2 for 2 with a homer, four RBI and two runs in the Admirals' win over North Rockland to close the regular season.

    Jenny Nardelli, Ketcham softball

    The senior survived a terrifying car accident then went 2 for 4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI, helping the Storm edge Arlington, 8-7, in a Section 1 Class AAA quarterfinal last Saturday.

    Tyrese Smalls, Poughkeepsie boys track and field

    The sophomore won the 400 meters in a personal best 51.09 seconds at the Northern Counties Championships.

    Morgan Doughty, John Jay softball

    She was 2 for 2 with two doubles and two RBI, and the catcher helped guide the pitching staff through a three-hitter in the Patriots' 6-1 win over Ossining in the Section 1 Class AAA quarterfinals.

    Marina Scott, Roosevelt girls track and field

    The sophomore won the girls 200 meters (26.18 seconds) and the 400 (58.53), helping the Presidents take first overall in the Mid Hudson Athletic League championships at Rondout Valley.

    Haley Washall, Wappingers girls lacrosse

    The freshman had four goals and four assists to lead the Warriors in a 17-7 win over Ossining in a Section 1 Class A quarterfinal. Wappingers advanced to the semifinals for the second straight season.

    Anthony Batkay, John Jay baseball

    The freshman earned his first varsity win, pitching five scoreless innings in relief and enabling the Patriots to erase a seven-run deficit for an eventual 8-7 win in nine innings.

    Noah Tarkos, Roosevelt boys track and field

    He won the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and the long jump (21 feet, 6 inches), leading the Roosevelt boys team to first place overall in the MHAL championships.

    Riley Weatherwax, Ketcham baseball

    The Penn State-bound senior pitched his first no-hitter with eight strikeouts, leading Ketcham in a 1-0 win over Fox Lane to close the regular season.

    Amanda Burren, Arlington girls track and field

    She won the high jump with a personal best 4 feet, 9 inches and took first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.90 seconds) at the Northern Counties Championships.

    Aidan Ifkovits, New Paltz boys track and field

    The Tennessee commit dominated the discus with a distance of 146 feet, 1 inches - almost 11 feet beyond second place ― at the MHAL championships.

    Leah Gunsett, Marlboro softball

    She pitched two straight complete games without rest, leading the Iron Dukes over Roosevelt and Pine Plains for the MHAL softball title. Gunsett allowed two earned runs and totaled 17 strikeouts that evening.

    Dan Collins, Spackenkill baseball

    The senior went 3 for 4 with a homer, a triple, five RBI and three runs against Saugerties last Tuesday. Collins notched his 118th career hit, breaking a program record that Justin Etts set in 2015.

    Violet Bliss, Pine Plains girls track and field

    The sophomore won the 1,500 (4:56.37) and the 3,000 meters (10:33.52) at the MHAL championships.

    Evan Giachinta, Haldane boys lacrosse

    The High Point-bound senior had three goals and eight assists for the Blue Devils in a win over Yonkers, setting a program record with 271 career points last Tuesday. He followed that with six goals and two assists in a win over Rye Neck.

    Juliana Juras, Marlboro track and field

    The senior took first in the girls shot put 36 feet, 3½ inches) and the discus (123 feet, 2 inches) at the Mid Hudson Athletic League championships, winning both events for the third straight season in this tournament.

    Rehan Shah and Omar Anwar, Spackenkill tennis

    The duo captured the Mid Hudson Athletic League doubles championship with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 win over Rondout Valley's Maven Flamhaft and Finn Kenney in the tournament final.

    Jack Maiale, New Paltz baseball

    The junior threw a no-hitter with a career-high 15 strikeouts, leading the Huguenots in a 6-0 win over Pine Plains.

    The sophomore pitched a one-hit shutout, leading the ninth-seeded Tigers in a 5-0 win over Westlake in the Section 1 Class B playoffs.
