The beginning of the week in the mid-Hudson Valley is starting out hot and humid, but is expected to get better as the weekend comes closer. Lower temperatures, similar to last week, are predicted for later on this week.

Wednesday may bring the most inclement weather across the Poughkeepsie and Middletown areas, according to Lead Meteorologist Brian Frugis of the Albany National Weather Service Office , as well as Meteorologist Bryan Ramsey of the New York National Weather Service Office .

If you have outdoor plans this Labor Day weekend, note a chance of rain returns Saturday.

Forecast for Poughkeepsie: Aug. 27-30, plus weekend brief

For Tuesday in the Poughkeepsie area, Frugis said there doesn't look to be any chance for precipitation, with sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid-80s, but it may be a bit on the humid side. In the morning, be wary if you're a commuter, there may be some patchy fog.

"Wednesday, we're going to have a frontal system starting to approach the area," Frugis said. "We could have some thunderstorms that could be on the stronger side."

There's about a 50% chance for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and into the evening. Plus, it's expected to be the hottest day this week, with the high temperature in the low 90s and a heat index that may come close to 95 degrees. The dew point is also on the higher end, in the lower 70s, which Frugis mentioned definitely gets toward the "pretty sticky threshold," feeling more like tropical weather.

"Once that system comes through, we'll have a little bit cooler and drier air starting to move back in for the rest of the week," Frugis said.

Thursday and Friday both have a similar forecast, with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s and partly sunny skies. Frugis noted these days are anticipated to be much less humid than Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looking ahead to the weekend, "there's a bit of uncertainty," Frugis said. "It looks like we might have another front getting close to us, maybe by Saturday."

During the day Saturday, the chance of showers is looking to be around 50%, with the highs continuing to be in the mid-to-upper 70s. For Sunday, the heat picks up again, with temperatures in the low 80s, but mostly sunny skies are predicted.

Forecast for Middletown: Aug. 27-30, plus weekend brief

For the Middletown area on Tuesday, "it's going to be a pretty nice day overall," Ramsey said, but a bit on the warmer side, with high temperatures in the mid-80s. It will be humid, but manageable. Ramsey said the day could start with some patchy fog, which should clear up as the morning progresses.

"Wednesday should start off dry and get hot — high of 91 degrees," he said.

Then, there's an increasing chance for showers and thunderstorms, with the dew point predicted to be in the low 70s, so the day will most likely be muggy.

On top of this, the heat index is supposed to be around 95 to 96 degrees. Wednesday afternoon and into the evening is when precipitation is expected to occur, with some lingering showers that may come through Wednesday night as well. Some of the showers and thunderstorms may become severe, with the main threats being damaging winds and potentially larger hail, Ramsey noted.

"Once we get past that, we will be cooling down again — highs back in the mid-70s, dry and partly cloudy, Thursday and Friday," Ramsey said.

Moving into the weekend, chances for rain come back Saturday, approximately 40% chance. The day is expected to have a high temperature near 76 degrees. Sunday, on the other hand, is anticipated to be mostly sunny and 81 degrees.
