Tanner Franklin commits to Vols, returns to Tennessee
Tennessee and head coach Tony Vitello received a commitment to the Vols’ program on Tuesday. Kennesaw State sophomore pitcher Tanner Franklin committed to Tennessee. “Extremely blessed for this new opportunity,” Franklin announced. “Thank you Lord. Go Vols! Psalms 24:17” The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Franklin (6-1) appeared in 34 games, including three starts, across the 2023-24 seasons at Kennesaw State. He recorded 61 strikeouts, a 6.34 ERA and five saves in 38.1 innings pitched. Franklin went to Kennesaw State from Jefferson County High School in Dandridge, Tennessee. Tennessee won the national championship and the Southeastern Conference regular-season and tournament titles in 2024. 2025 will be the eighth season for Tennessee under Vitello. Now past the midway point of the offseason’s third phase, football is speeding toward the start of the 2024 college football season. After a 9-4 campaign in their third season under Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel, the Vols enter a new era of the sport with an expanded SEC and the 12-team College Football Playoff heading in the right direction with 20 wins over the past two seasons, but while some position groups will be relying on a handful of veteran players, other units are turning the page to newcomers or the program’s crop of up-and-coming talent. With SEC Media Days and the start of preseason camp nearing, GoVols247 this month will be ranking Tennessee football’s most important players for the upcoming season.

It doesn’t seem that long ago to Alex Mink that he was on the Neyland Stadium turf, welcoming the Tennessee football team before a game. “I always enjoyed the pregame,” said Mink, who played the saxophone for four years in The Pride of the Southland Band. “We were at the open ’T’ before the game. You could feel the vibration. You knew you were playing, but you couldn’t hear it. That’s a cool moment.”
Tennessee baseball freshman infielder enters transfer portal
Baseball freshman infielder Camden Bates has entered the transfer portal, a UT spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday. Bates is the eighth Vol to enter the portal this summer. Bates received eight at-bats in 10 games this season for the Vols. He tallied two hits to hit .250. One of his two hits was a three-run home run to left field for his first career long ball during a midweek win over Alabama A&M.
What to watch: The SEC Network’s Tennessee Takeover
Revisit the best year in the history of Tennessee Athletics during the annual 24-hour SEC Network Takeover on Friday. It’s takeover time on the SEC Network this month, and Tennessee’s turn is coming up on Friday starting at midnight. As the league’s network does annually every summer, each school gets a full 24 hours to pick and choose a customized set of programming highlighting some of its best games and most memorable moments from the most recent athletic year – and the Vols and Lady Vols are coming off the best one in their history. Tennessee finished a best-ever third in the final Directors Cup standings and took home a third straight SEC All-Sports Title, and the SEC Network Takeover will allow fans a chance to relive those successes, from the baseball national championship to the Citrus Bowl and men’s basketball SEC title.
Three Oak Ridge players win medals in table tennis at Senior Olympics in Franklin
Three local table tennis players were medalists at this year’s Tennessee Senior Olympics finals. Competing June 24 at Franklin’s Academy Park, Greg Hamilton won a bronze medal in the 70-74 men’s singles and teamed with Geoff Tillett to win a bronze in 65-69 doubles, a news release said. Blaine Stewart was a silver medalist in the men’s 55-59 singles. All three have competed locally at the Oak Ridge Senior Center.
