Runs were hard to come by for Poynette’s Home Talent team last week.

In a 14-3 loss at Rio on Tuesday, July 16, a league makeup game from June 1, the Indians were limited to five hits and batters struck out nine times, with all their runs coming in the last two innings.

Rio racked up 12 hits, three of them doubles, while taking seven walks and two hit by pitches.

Two days later, playing at Verona, Poynette was shut out 10-0 in a Night League game. Undefeated in Night League play, Verona collected nine hits, earned five walks and had three batters hit by pitches.

The offense perked up on Sunday but DeForest was too much for Poynette in a 9-5 Eastern Section victory for the Deacons, who scored five runs in the first inning – three coming on a three-run homer.

Joel Thimsen’s RBI single in the third got Poynette on the board, as Riley Radewan settled in on the mound, throwing three-up, three-down innings in the second through the fifth. Saddled with the loss, Radewan went eight innings, striking out five and walking two, while allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs. Scoring chances went by the wayside for the Indians, who stranded 13 baserunners.

“Riley threw a very good game today,” said Davy Tomlinson, Poynette’s manager. “Unfortunately, we just left too many guys on base.”

In the seventh, Poynette scratched two more runs across, as Ian Nowell led off by getting by a pitch, with Tomlinson and Kory Ryan following with singles. Radewan walked to force in a run, while Mike Leiterman hit a sacrifice fly to plate Tomlinson.

“We played pretty well today, but we just weren't able to close out a couple innings and it hurt us,” said Tomlinson. “We got down by a lot early in the game, but I'm proud of how the guys hung in there and battled back.”

They had a big opportunity in the ninth, as Poynette loaded the bases after a double play. A strikeout ended it with the tying run at the plate. Radewan finished with two RBIs, while Thimsen, Tomlinson and Ryan all had two hits apiece, with Ryan blasting a double over the leftfielder’s head. Tomlinson had an RBI and scored two runs. As a team, however, Poynette struck out 11 times.

A three-run bottom of the eighth for DeForest was key to the Deacons’ win. For the game, DeForest scored seven of their runs with two outs. The Deacons are sitting in third place in the Eastern Section and may have clinched a playoff spot. Earlier in the season, Poynette downed DeForest 4-3 in a walk-off win.

Poynette is now 6-15 overall, with a 3-8 mark in league play. The Indians are 1-6 in Night League action and 2-1 in exhibition play.

Just two games remain. Poynette is home to play Black Earth on Thursday in Night League play. The Indians host Rio on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Fan Appreciation Day, which features concession stand specials, prizes and giveaways, a pulled pork and coleslaw cook-off and raffles.
