Affordable housing project breaks ground in Prairie Du Chien

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (WKBT) -- A vision for affordable living took root Wednesday in Prairie Du Chien.

Shovels hit the dirt Wednesday morning to break ground on a new 24 unit housing development called "Prairie Cottages."

Couleecap Community action agency and Gerrard Companies are behind the project, which aims to provide quality homes for income-eligible workers, seniors and disabled residents.

The development will feature solar panels to keep energy cost down.

Couleecap's executive director said the new apartments will provide some much-needed affordable housing for the area.

"Many people were traveling down from outside the area to work and there was a critical shortage of housing, especially affordable housing in the area for the local workforce," said Hetti Brown Couleecap's executive director

Prairie Cottages will be completed in early 2025.
