A 7-Year-Old Discovers a 2.95-Carat Diamond at Arkansas State Park on Her Birthday

A lucky youngster had the best birthday ever when she found a huge 2.95-carat golden brown diamond at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. The budding gemologist, celebrating her seventh birthday, stumbled upon the diamond on September 1. It's the second-largest diamond found by a visitor this year, only beaten by a 3.29-carat one in March, says the park. Aspen Brown was at the park with her dad and grandmother. She spotted a small gem the size of a green pea along a path in the northeast area of the park.

Park officials later confirmed it was a diamond. The diamond has a beautiful golden-brown color and a shiny sparkle. It's a complete crystal with no damage, just a tiny crevice on one side from its formation, according to Waymon Cox, the assistant park superintendent.

Aspen isn't the only lucky one at this park. Usually, one or two visitors find diamonds here every day. Since a farmer first found diamonds on this land, over 75,000 diamonds have been discovered. The park is a 37-acre field that used to be a volcanic crater. Alongside diamonds, you can also find other precious gems like amethysts and garnets because of the unique geology here.
