    A GREAT REGIONALS: Phillips tops D3 boys/girls track and field, Chequamegon second

    The Phillips High School men’s and women’s track and field teams won the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Regional Meet on May 20.

    Chequamegon was second in the mens division, followed by Hurley, Washburn, Solon Springs/Northwood, Drummond, Bayfield, South Shore, Winter, Mellen, Lac Courte Oreilles, and Mercer.

    Hurley finished second in the women’s division, followed by Chequamegon in third, the South Shore, Drummond, Mercer, Washburn, Solon Springs/Northwood, Winter, Mellen, Butternut, Bayfield, and Lac Courte Oreilles.

    “We were very proud of our Eagles for a strong second and third place team finish,” said Chequamegon Coach Mary Patterson. “We are excited to have 20 athletes advancing to sectionals on Thursday in Cameron. Our teams really did improve this season and as a coach there’s nothing more we can ask for.”

    BOYS

    Highlights for the area boys teams. The top four in each event qualify for sectionals:

    Phillips senior Maverick Hoogland won the 3,200 meter run. Sophomore teammate Gavin Esterholm was second and junior teammate James Vollendorf was fourth.

    Phillips senior Hayden Sokolowski won the 110 meter hurdles. Chequamegon senior Robert Schienebeck was second. Sokolowski was also first in the 300 meter hurdles, followed by Schienebeck in second.

    “Robert Schienebeck also ran very tough in the hurdles to set new personal records for him,” Patterson said.

    Phillips sophomore Ben Virnig was first in the pole vault. Chequamegon junior Winter Edberg was fourth.

    Phillips sophomore Logan Sokolowski was second in the 1,600 meter run. Sophomore teammate Evan Johnson was third.

    Phillips freshman Jonathan Parker was second in the triple jump.

    Chequamegon senior AJ Morgan was second in the shot put. Morgan was also second in the boys discus, where Phillips junior Brody Janacek placed third, and Chequamegon junior Greg Morgan was fourth.

    “AJ Morgan continued his strength in the throws to advance in both shot and discus,” Patterson said.

    Phillips sophomore Ben Virnig was third in the 200 meter dash. Chequamegon senior Harland Kasowicz was fourth.

    Chequamegon sophomore Jarrett Heckendorf was third in the 800 meter run. Heckendorf was also fourth in both the 100 meter and the 400 meter dash.

    “Jarrett Heckendorf scored in the top four of all of his events, running a new combination to help the boys team score points,” Coach Patterson said. “Jarrett had a very strong night setting two personal records. “

    Phillips won the 4x800 meter relay. The runners were Maverick Hoogland, Julian Ellingen, James Vollendorf, Gavin Esterholm, Spencer Henney, and Arlo Berens. Chequamegon was fourth with runners Austin Hoffman, Cooper Michalski, Jayden Oscar, Zac Roberts, and Noah Siegmann.

    Chequamegon was second in the 4x200 meter relay. The runners were Devin Adams-Dunn, Jackson Ernst, Judah Johnson, Harland Kasowicz, and Jeremiah Miguel.Phillips was fourth with runners Ethan Upson, BJ Lowary, Jonathan Parker, Logan Sokolowski, Spencer Henney, and Steven Bredemann.

    Phillips was second in the 4x400 meter relay. The runners were Ayron Delaskey, Gavin Esterholm, Ben Virnig, Hayden Sokolowski, Treyvon Christl, and Maverick Hoogland. Chequamegon was third with runners Jackson Ernst, Judah Johnson, Jeremiah Miguel, Robert Schienebeck, and Noah Siegmann.

    Phillips was third in the 4x100 meter relay. The runners were Ethan Upson, BJ Lowary, Logan Sokolowski, Jonathan Parker, Steven Bredemann, and Evan Johnson.

    GIRLS

    Highlights for the area girls teams. The top four in each event qualify for sectionals:

    Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski won all three distances races. She was first in the 3,200 meter run, with Phillips junior Meredith Merlak in second. Michalski won the 1,600 meter run with Merlak placing third. Michalski won the 800 meter run, with Phillips sophomore Leah Harper in second, and Butternut sophomore Caitlynn BeBeau in third.

    “Autumn Michalski took the distance events running very relaxed races to keep her legs fresh and ready for Thursday (sectionals),” Coach Patterson said.

    Chequamegon junior Clare Yunk won the pole vault. Phillips junior Journee Wood was second, and freshman teammate Katelyn Kurth was fourth.

    “Clare Yunk soared to a personal best to win pole vault going 7 feet, 3 inches, a big feat for Clare,” Patterson said.

    Phillips juniors Sarah Knaack and Jessica Morrone were first and second in the 200 meter dash.

    Phillips junior Jaycee Pomeroy was second in both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles.

    Phillips junior Jessica Morrone was third in the girls long jump. Junior teammate Rylie Sidenbender was fourth.

    Phillips junior Kiana Zierer was third in the 100 meter dash. Senior teammate Keileigh Doll was fourth.

    Phillips freshman Layla Staroba was fourth in the discus throw.

    Phillips won the 4x400 meter relay. The runners were Ruby McCormick, Addie Gabay, Sarah Knaack, Leah Harper, Caitlin Pesko, and Jessica Morrone.

    Phillips won the 4x800 meter relay. The team members were Ruby McCormick, Addie Gabay, Sarah Knaack, Leah Harper, Caitlin Pesko and Endora Udovich. Chequamegon was fourth. The team members included Carla Akriba-Rodriguez, Abigail Humphrey, Mallory Smith, Clare Yunk, and Leelan Carroll.

    Phillips was second in the 4x200 meter relay. The runners included Jessica Morrone, Jaycee Pomeroy, Katelyn Kurth, Kiana Zierer, Layla Staroba, and Journee Wood. Chequamegon was fourth with runners Delaney Hanson, Nathalie Schmidt, Clare Yunk, and Mallory Smith.

    Phillips was third in the 4x100 meter relay. The runners were Rylie Sidenbender, Layla Staroba, Keileigh Doll, Kiana Zierer, and Journee Wood.
