Looking for something to eat made in the style like mom used to?. If that thought has crossed your mind a time or two as an adult (believe me, it has mine), then you're in luck. That's because two of the finest mom-and-pop joints for good old comfort food in...
The rats of Evanston: Searching for solutions
It was a Saturday morning at the beginning of October. Larry Heaney, a resident of Evanston for almost 30 years, was starting a survey of his neighborhood. Going down the alleyway behind his home, Heaney checked out the trash bins at each residence, and 10 out of the 30 bins had one thing in common: They each had holes in them. He also noticed that several bins were overflowing with trash.
Fastest-Growing Illinois Place Has Italian Food, Bowling & Bocce?
This will not be surprising to you even a little bit, but I've never been considered trendy. That means there's something I do not have in common with an Illinois place that is one of the fastest-growing in America as they combine Italian food, bowling and bocce ball into one experience.
Bob Newhart, the beloved comedian who never forgot his Chicago roots, dies at 94
Never, in the lively history of show business, has there been anybody like Bob Newhart and it was in Chicago that he burst onto the entertainment landscape. For more than half a century he remained a vital, admired and impossible-to-imitate presence in nightclubs, on albums, in films and, most profoundly, on TV. After a lifetime of making people laugh, Newhart died Thursday at his home in Los ...
Savor Georgian Dumplings and Wine at a Suburban Chicago Hideaway
Chicago is home to a robust and diverse wine scene, yet the city is somehow behind the curve when it comes to glasses and bottles from Georgia, a nation at the crossroads of Asia and Europe that’s home to an 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition. If Tamta Sanodze, founder of Georgian restaurant Stumara in suburban Wheeling gets her way, that’s all about to change.
New in Evanston: A first look at Lefty’s Righteous Bagels
First Mensch’s, now Lefty’s Righteous Bagels. Lovers of Jewish heritage foods are having a real moment in Evanston this month!. When it comes to bagels, what’s not to like? And yet, Lefty’s provides us with the capacity to love. It’s early days for Brad Nadborne (aka “Lefty”) and his team of intrepid bakers, but if today’s soft opening is any indication, these bagels do not disappoint. This is a Montreal-style bagel, meaning it’s been hand-rolled, kettle-boiled, then baked… but in a notoriously fussy wood-burning oven. It can be hard to get the bake just right, but when you do— as Lefty’s surely does — then it’s just the right ratio of crust to chew.

At This Time: The danger of windows
Volunteer Corrie Fisher shows a replica of a black-and-white warbler that she created out of fabric at an art workshop near the Main Street Metra Station. An exhibit called Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene (our current geological age) is enlisting residents to craft likenesses of more than 10,000 birds to call attention to the danger of windows. The group promotes ways to make buildings safer for birds. Fisher worked at the Main-Dempster Block Party. The next workshop in Evanston will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 at the Thursday Night Market at Fountain Square. (Photo by Richard Cahan.)
Novelty Golf & Games celebrates its Diamond Jubilee
Novelty Golf & Games is nostalgia writ large. Considerably large. Located in north suburban Lincolnwood, near the corner of Devon and Lincoln Avenue, the complex also includes the Bunny Hutch restaurant. Founded in 1949—and celebrating its 75th anniversary July 20–21—it’s a reminder of an era that was once abundant with mini golf, batting cages, and other amusements.
‘2 Pianos 4 Hands’ Brings Two Brilliant Performers to the Northlight Stage: Review
Phenomenal: That is an adjective that I use very sparingly. But it is the only way to describe the multitalented brilliance of Adam LaSalle and Matthew McGloin, the two wildly gifted performers who are not only superb musicians, but altogether remarkable actors, wildly zany comedians, deft movers and irresistible “brainiacs” as well. And they are now electrifying Northlight Theatre’s stage in Skokie with a show titled “2 Pianos 4 Hands.”
Wednesday’s Arrington Lagoon ‘paint out’ winner
Abdoulaye Conde won Wednesday’s “paint out” at Evanston’s Plein Air Festival. Last year, Conde won the prestigious $125,000 first place award at the ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On Wednesday, he sold his Arrington Lagoon painting (above) for $300. Conde is an artist, muralist and musician who emigrated from Guinea and moved to the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago in 2022. “I love this so much,” he said of the competition in plein-air style painting. “I love being in nature and meeting friends I can talk to.” Conde will be joining artists on Thursday painting Central Street near Independence Park. You can read more about him in Roundtable art writer Gay Riseborough’s feature story on this year’s edition of the Plein Air Festival. (Photo by Lisa Degliantoni.)
Local Music Roundup July 18-24
Your intrepid music reporter is back! I’m sorry I disappeared, but I have a great excuse. I had open heart surgery to repair a congenital heart defect. I’m in good shape now, so I’ll be listening to and writing about the wonderful musical environment of Evanston again!

Thursday’s Plein Air Festival winner showcases a ‘good alley’
Artist Don Yang holds his winning painting from Thursday’s competition at Evanston’s Plein Air Festival. He has taught and judged at previous festivals, and joined 27 painters working on scenes along Central Street. Yang, of Chicago, said he had trouble finding a subject, but loves painting a “good alley,” like the one he chose to showcase. On Friday, painters will compete on Noyes Street. And on Sunday, more than 60 artists will show their favorite work from the week at Rotary International, 1560 Sherman Ave. (Photo by Lisa Degliantoni)
