Former Averett University basketball player killed in crash
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WDBJ) - A recently-graduated basketball player at Averett University has been killed in a crash, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Jamael Carter, Jr. of Fayetteville, NC, a member of the Averett class of ‘24, was a four-year member of the Cougars team and leader on campus, says the university, which issued this statement:
Laidback Golf Tour humbled by Caswell Pines Golf Club
On Monday, July 15th, in near 100 degree heat 14 members of the Laidback Golf Tour participated in their seventh tournament of the 2024 season. The event was held at Caswell Pines Golf Club in Yanceyville, NC and once again as it has in all the prior seasons the challenging layout has held the Tour members in check. Again there were no rounds turned in with rounds in the seventies and only six total birdies were carded.

Otterbots win key home games, remain in first place
The Danville Otterbots maintained their lead in the Appalachian State’s Eastern Division this past week, as the local club won a pair of home games at the Danville Athletic Park against one of their biggest divisional competitors, the Burlington Sock Puppets. Then the Otterbots won a home game Saturday night against the Johnson City Doughboys before closing out the week with an 8-6 victory on Sunday to complete a series sweep.
