PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A man was sentenced to prison for the shooting death of another man nearly three years ago at a Providence restaurant.
On Tuesday, Juan Rivera, 37, received two consecutive life sentences for the Saturday morning murder of Jorge Garcia, 38.
On the morning of Sept. 25, 2021 a masked man reportedly walked into Roque’s Cafe off Broad Street, where the 38-year-old was eating breakfast, and shot him six times, according to police. Garcia was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
BACKGROUND: Police investigating deadly shooting at Providence cafe Investigators identified Rivera as the suspect with the help of surveillance footage from the café and the surrounding area, as well as his cell phone data.
Two months later, Massachusetts State Police arrested Rivera at Boston Logan International Airport and took him into custody .
The State Attorney’s Office said another man believed to be involved, identified as Julio Castro, was arrested that same day in Providence. Castro was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy. Charges are still pending at this time, according to court records.
Following a two-week trial, the jury found Rivera guilty on multiple charges , including first-degree murder and discharging of a firearm while committing a crime of violence resulting in death.
