PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Roger Williams Park Zoo is mourning the loss of a baby sloth that was born earlier this year.

Nicko, a Linne’s two-toed sloth, unexpectedly passed away earlier this summer, according to the zoo.

In a social media post Friday , the zoo explained that Nicko began showing symptoms of a respiratory infection. Despite receiving supportive care and treatment at the onset of his symptoms, Nicko succumbed to the virus.

Nicko was born back in March to first-time mom Beanie. The zoo said Beanie “appears to be behaving normally,” though veterinarians will continue to monitor her and the other sloths for symptoms.

“The entire Roger Williams Zoo family [is] mourning this loss deeply,” the zoo wrote. “Nicko will always be remembered for his gentle spirit and will be missed greatly by all.”
